Riding…. Just for Fun??
I can’t remember the last time riding was “just for fun” for me. It was my SPORT. It was my PASSION. It was my JOB. After some health issues set me back, I had to reevaluate my relationship with riding. I can’t take the risks or push my body the way I used to. But, I have lived and breathed horses for 25+ years… what would I possibly do without horses?
I took a short rest (i.e. 3 months of horrible winter) and only visited my “semi” retired horse. That wasn’t cutting it. I was still getting the riding (particularly jumping) itch. After being cleared by the doctor, I decided to… TAKE LESSONS! I have not been able to take a lesson in years. I haven’t had the time or the energy or the money. I was always the one giving the lessons. I have to tell you… It is fantastic to be taking lessons again.
Yes, it is hard, especially because I used to be able to do more than I can do now. (But that is a different post!) Honestly though, it is very refreshing just to think and focus on me. I have found a fun, but extremely knowledgeable trainer, who keeps me on my toes. I like being able to trust that the horses I am riding actually are going to try to do what I ask. I can’t wait to see where this piece of my equestrian journey takes me!
